I proposed to her in Parc Guell. This is the Gaudi park in Barcelona. It was a one knee thing and I did it in Spanish. Whew! She said yes. I got the traveler’s phrase book from her at Sagrada Familia, the Gaudi church to find the word for marriage. I then put together a rough Spanish sentence to get the point across. Then I practiced for the rest of the day. When we got the park there must have been 30,000 people there. There were people at every corner. I complained about the masses a little and suggested we walk around. I saw another level of the park that looked less occupied and told Mary I want to go up there. We passed some rock stairs that went through a wooded area and I thought this is the place. As we got to the stairs Mary said, Let’s go this way, and pointed to the stairs. My plan unfolds. As we walked the stairs there was a flat spot somewhat like a landing. Here it happened. I got on one knee, looked up at Mary and said, “Maria. Yo quiero tu mano en casado”. I am sure this is not exactly a correct sentence in Spanish but when I got on one knee she knew my intention. She didn’t say anything at first. I asked her if she was OK. She said are you sure? I said yes. And finally the yes I was looking for came, “Si”
On to other things. We went to Sagrada Familia. This is a church designed by Gaudi. It is quite different from the architecture we have seen on this trip. Most churches look like they are from the 15th century with elaborate fluted pillars and scroll. Other buildings are quite new with more modern design. This church is a combination of rounded edges and hard, sharp figures adorning the outside. Venetion glass mosaics adorn the large pillars. This is one of the must see buildings in Barcelona. I hope to put a picture on the website of a postcard I purchased showing an aerial view of the church and the surrounding area. I cannot believe the density of this city.
You know that meal I told you about we ate last night? Well, specifically the wine. I am hung over this morning. That has not helped with sightseeing today.
Word/Phrase learned today: Buenos Tardes and Buenos Noches / Used as a greeting but Buenos Tardes is used before dinner and Buenos Noches is used after dinner. Remember, dinner is between 8pm and 12am.
